Livingston, Scotland – May 8, 2012 – memsstar Limited, a leading provider of deposition and etch equipment, services and process expertise to the micro-electrical mechanical systems (MEMS) and semiconductor industries, today announced that it has named Mike Thompson as chief executive officer (CEO). Thompson replaces interim CEO, Peter Connock, who remains with memsstar as chairman of the board.
Thompson’s appointment follows the consolidation of the company’s semiconductor and MEMS offerings under the singular brand of memsstar. He is tasked with continued rapid revenue growth in both markets through organic growth, new products and services as well as strategic partnerships. Most recently, Thompson has been providing technical and operational consultancy services to investors and research institutes in Europe seeking to create and develop new high technology businesses.
“We have brought Mike in to take memsstar to the next level,” stated Connock. “His broad industry experience covers a range of activities from new product and technology development to volume manufacturing operations, as well as facility construction and management.”
“memsstar represents a very unique and exciting challenge for me at this stage in my career,” commented Thompson. “It’s extremely well positioned at the high end of the semiconductor refurbishment market in Europe with a great deal of market opportunity existing for revenue expansion. On the back of its semiconductor work, the company has developed tremendous etch and coating technology for the global MEMS market. The upside in both markets is extremely attractive given the quality of the offering.”
From 2008 to 2011, Thompson was the chief technical officer (CTO)/chief operating officer at Replisaurus Technologies, a start-up developing an innovative approach to advanced copper wiring for the manufacture of integrated circuits. Prior to that, he served as the Deputy CTO and VP of STMicroelectronics where he was responsible for the development of CMOS and derived technologies, as well as the French VLSI manufacturing operations in Rousset and Crolles. He led the factory start-ups of Crolles 1 (200mm) and Crolles 2 (300mm) and served as operations manager of those facilities, overseeing approximately 5000 employees and a production output value of around $1 billion per year. He holds a BSc in astronomy with advanced mathematics from the University of Glasgow.
